TEHRAN, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Iran's parliament dismissed some western media reports about the number of infections and death toll over the novel coronavirus outbreak in the country, press TV reported on Thursday.

"The figures released by foreign media about coronavirus cases and casualties (in Iran) are wrong and invalid, and are in no ways confirmed by the Parliament's Research Center," said Mohammad Qassemi, the caretaker director of the Parliament's Research Center.

Foreign media outlets have distorted the figures, said Qassemi.

According to the TV, several foreign media have been reporting fake news about Iran since the epidemic started in the country on Feb. 19.

Iran on Thursday reported a total of 77,995 COVID-19 cases of whom 4,869 have died.
