SHANGHAI, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- The fourth meeting of the World Media Summit (WMS) presidium will be held in Shanghai on Nov. 18.
Senior executives of 13 media organizations from 11 countries will attend the meeting.
The WMS was co-initiated by nine media organizations with global influence, including Xinhua News Agency, News Corporation, the Associated Press, Reuters, TASS Russian News Agency, Kyodo News, and BBC.
Organized by Xinhua, the first WMS was held in Beijing from Oct. 8 to 10, 2009. More than 170 media leaders from across the world attended the event, which issued a joint statement.
From July 5 to 7, 2012, the second WMS was held in Moscow. This summit drew more than 300 representatives of 213 media outlets from 102 countries. Representatives exchanged views on electronic media development around the theme of "Global Media: Meeting Challenges of the 21st Century," the role of social networks in contemporary media space, and the relationship between media and the business sector.
The third WMS was held in Doha, Qatar, on March 20-21, 2016. Around 350 delegates of media agencies from nearly 100 countries and regions attended the meeting. Cai Mingzhao, executive president of the WMS and president of Xinhua, presided over the meeting and put forward three proposals on media outlets' social responsibilities, innovation and development, and exchanges and cooperation. The World Media Summit Doha Statement was issued.
The WMS presidium is the supreme decision-making body of the summit. The presidium is composed of international media organizations. Each organization appoints a senior director as co-chairperson of the presidium.
The first meeting of the WMS presidium was held in Beijing on Sept. 27, 2011. The second meeting was held in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, on Oct. 10, 2013. The third meeting was held in Doha on March 20, 2016.
