The second Media Forum of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) opened in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan, on May 24.

President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbay Jeenbekov attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

The forum -- Role of Media in the Development of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization passed the Resolution of the SCO Media Forum after heated discussions.

It promoted the “Shanghai Spirit” and expanded media exchanges and cooperation.

The forum brought together over 160 attendees including representatives of foreign embassies in Kyrgyzstan, media outlets of SCO member states, observer countries and dialogue partners, the SCO Secretariat, and heads of Kyrgyzstan government departments and mainstream media.

In June 2017, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed at the SCO Astana Summit the launching of SCO media summit, which was welcomed widely by the SCO member states.

Kyrgyzstan, assuming the rotating presidency of the SCO, hosted the second media summit, following China holding the first in Beijing in June 2018.

It attached great importance to the event and made good arrangements.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Sooronbay Jeenbekov pointed out that the SCO’s international standing is becoming noticeably stronger year after year and is now one of the most respected regional organizations in the world. Kyrgyzstan attaches great importance to the organization and is ready to cooperate with other member states to carry out practical cooperation and exchanges in various fields including media.

He said the SCO was born in an era of comprehensive information development, with information technology advancing each passing day, and the media gaining unprecedented influence.

Media play a very important role in promoting the development of the SCO, he said.

He hoped that the forum will uphold and promote the “Shanghai Spirit” and all members will fully share ideas, carry out constructive dialogues, and work together to promote and publicize the development of the SCO.

Hu Xiaohan, secretary of the CPC Committee and executive vice president of All-China Journalists Association, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony on behalf of the Chinese media delegation.

He said the heads of state of China and Kyrgyzstan share a clear understanding of the importance of media cooperation in the SCO and attach great importance to it. Active news coverage and close media cooperation are indispensable for the development of the SCO. The media of the member states of the SCO should view the “Shanghai Spirit” as a guidance and spread the concept of mutual trust, mutual benefit and equal consultation in the world, to build a general consensus on mutual respect and common development, thereby creating favorable public opinion for the SCO’s prospect.

Representatives of the SCO Secretariat, India, Kazakhstan, China, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan also spoke at the opening ceremony.

The forum conducted two panel sessions: Dynamic Promotion of the SCO Platform through Media Resources of the SCO Countries and Creating a Single Platform for Effective Interaction between the Media of the SCO Countries.

Zhang Xinxin, president of China News Service, and Chen Xuehui, director of the International Department of Economic Daily, spoke at the panel sessions.
